House Training Your Canine

Yes this is a very important part of training your canine. Tricks, sit, come etc are important too but if you have a house dog, trust us, you'll soon find out just how important house training is!  It's the boundaries related to where they can and cannot go all the way to toilet training your canine that is all important!  Here is some help to making your new puppy/puppies house trained.

OUTSIDE DOGS

If you want an 'outside' dog, make him an outside dog and let him know the boundaries. So letting him into the house whenever he feels like it is not going to help your canine learn that he shouldn't be.  In the beginning, find something to obstruct the doorway, high enough so that your dog cannot get over it and strong enough that it cannot be knocked over by him either.

Repetition is the key!  If you say "NO" in a forceful voice to your canine whenever it's about to enter the house (outside dogs), it will learn from this and will just not come in after some time.

Electrical storms are another matter.  All dogs get scared of the loud noises and flashing of electrical storms (it is also said that they can sense when one is approaching - usually recognized by random and constant barking).  Making them comfortable is important.  If you have a laundry, it's sometimes best to put your 'outside' dog into that room when it is thundering.  Many dogs have been known to abandon their trusted yards during thunderstorms in search of a safe shelter.  If you don't mind, having your outside dog inside during this commotion would be wise.  You'll find they're very loving and affectionate due to their need to feel safe and it's obvious they trust you if they cling to you.

There are numerous ways to train your dog to sleep in its own bed and not just anywhere. One such way, if it's a puppy, once it's fallen asleep, place it on the bed.  It will wake up in its own bed. Try this for up to a week, every time it falls asleep. You will find your dog will begin to recognize where it wakes up and will attempt to rest in the same spot.  Also putting his food bowels beside or near the bed will help with the natural progressions of eat and sleep :).

Bedding for your outside dog can sometimes be difficult to find.  You'll need something durable, mildew resistant, fungus resistant, easy cleaning and if possible, moisture resistant.  If you're planning on having the bed out in the open, sunlight resistance would be good too.  There are many beds for different climates (check out this thermo bed) and different areas of your outdoor environment.  If your dog has its own doghouse, sleeps on the verandah or somewhere under the house, there are beds to suit every area.  Find more information on bedding here

INSIDE DOGS

If you want him to be an inside dog (usually these are smaller breeds - due to room and comfort ability), you will need to house train your dog.  Just like you would a cat, you teach him his toilet area (usually outside) and no chewing the furniture!  The only difference would be - DOGS don't have a kitty litter box!

Toilet training is probably one of the most important parts of house training you can teach your indoor dog.  Chewing furniture, yes that is just as important in teaching out of habit - Training / Breaking Habits Flower Essences can help reduce the objects your puppy likes to chew - usually during it's teething phase.  However, toilet training is usually based on the hygiene and stench factors. Skip to the Toilet Training page for more information.

Below the two beds is one of many guides you can use to train your dog about urinating in the wrong spot.  Unless you have a very very strong fondness to your dog (ie he'll keep you company while you sleep at the foot of your bed), you should make sure you have a doggy bed in the laundry, lounge room or... if you prefer... beside your own bed.  If you're looking for some creativeness, we have this dog bed below that will make this member of the family feel like he's really human!  Click here for a full collection of dog beds
